Wiki
So I decided to also put up a wiki, like I threatened to do in my previous post. You can find it here: http://dabrado.net/wiki/
So far I am just using the wiki to put up some school writings and notes, though I hope to use it as a platform to develop my ideas in a more evolutionary fashion than I feel like this blog allows. If that works, this blog might become a place where I primarily post links to wiki pages that are in a newly "publishable" state, i.e. in a state that I feel is ready for public reading and feedback.
I'm liking this idea. For now, anyway.
Blogging and Wiki'ing
This blog experiment does not seem to be going well. In some respects I wonder if a blog is a proper format for me to express my ideas. I believe that I tend to be very iterative when I'm writing what I'm thinking, so I wonder if a wiki format would actually be more appropriate. Then the "blog", being temporal-focused in nature, could essentially be the change log for the wiki. Or perhaps I just need to make a better effort to write my ideas here, or to find what I'm interested in writing about. Speaking of wikis, I've been ... As part of my RA work on UrbanSim, I wrote up a little document about working with feature branches in Subversion that tries to be robust against people working with the repository while trying to do syncing or remerging operations: http://trondheim.cs.washington.edu/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/wiki/FeatureBranchingAndMerging However, this may soon be obsolete because I notice that in the development version of Subversion there are new mechanisms for handling syncing an remerging: Keeping a Branch in Sync and Feature Branches (note the "--reintegrate" option) So much easier! What is Information Science?
What is Information Science? Given that I am working towards a PhD in it, this question might be relevant. I mention it because this question was asked today by the prof of one of our introductory courses, "Theoretical Foundations of Information Science". The question seemed more a way to provoke discussion than actually get at a definition, which apparently we left fairly open. Certainly, themes did come up. Such as, its connections to social science (but is it purely a social science?), its concern about technology (but is such a concern required?), or its centering on information (but what is ... Yes, another blog. No, this isn't an April Fool's joke. Why another blog? At the moment, mostly as a personal exercise. I'd like to try writing down my ideas or observations with the threat of a public readership. My hope is that such a threat will push me to express myself in ways that would be interesting or informative to people outside of, well, me. We'll see how that goes. I also had a grand scheme to use blogging as an excuse to code up my website in a blog/wiki-like format, derived from some base principles I was interested in ... Read more
